Finally!
Thanks to the efforts of an ad hoc committee comprised of public officials, concerned citizens and former Red Raiders, one of our own is being honored with the naming of a street. - If only temporarily. Bennett "Pope" Gregory, 1964 graduate and member of the Red Raider Nation Hall of Fame, was given that honored posthumously by the Uniontown City Council at its monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 6th, 2001. The name Bennett Gregory Avenue could replace the name Mifflin Avenue, after hearings and a vote by Uniontown City Council.

Who was Bennett Gregory?
  • A 1964 Uniontown Area High School graduate.
  • He played on the 1962 and 1964 PIAA State Championship Basketball teams.
  • He was a running back on the WPIAL Football Championship team of 1962.
  • He was one of few Red Raiders to play in the annual Big 33 game.

  • He was a running back on the University of Nebraska Football team.
  • He was a running back on the Buffalo Bills NFL Football team.
  • He was a coach, until his death in 1997, for the University of Colorado Football team.
More Efforts!
The renaming of one Uniontown street in honor of a Red Raider is but one effort
currently being worked on by the ad hoc committee. Other efforts include:
  • The renaming of the stretch of street between newly named Bennett Gregory Avenue and Main Street - MUNSEY LANE - in honor of the Munsey brothers. Each of whom played professional football.
  • The renaming of an as yet to be determined street - SANDY STEPHENS DRIVE in honor of Football All-American Sandy Stephens.
  • An annual SCHOOL OF CHAMPIONS DAY in honor of Uniontown High Schools many championships.
  • The renaming of the street of street along Stewart Avenue (Between Jefferson Street and Fayette Street) - THE AVENUE OF THE CHAMPIONS - to honor at least 25 of Uniontown's greatest sports stars.
  • The renaming of Grant Street Park - ERNIE DAVIS PARK - in honor of Heisman trophy winner Ernie Davis.
  • The renaming of Mill Street Park - RON SEPIC PARK - in honor of High School Football and Basketball All-American Ron Sepic.
Your Efforts!
If you would like to join these efforts you can! Simply send your contact information to rrnation@thinkwebworks.com. Because these efforts would take little or no effort to implement, no funds are being requested so far. Your moral support is, however, quite welcome.
